King Vikram brought down the corpse hanging to the tree and set out for the cemetery as usual. While Vikram was walking along, Betal said, "Vikram, now I shall tell you a story and you should answer the question that I ask at the end. If you do not answer, your head shall break into a thousand pieces." Saying so, Betal began to tell the story..
Long, long ago, in the city of Ujjain lived a washerman named Dhavala.
He was a handsome young man and many a young girl wished to marry him. But, Dhavala loved Madanasundari, the beautiful daughter of an old washerman, who lived in the next village. Dhavala decided to marry her at any cost.
He approached his parents and said, "If you wish to see me happy all through my life, go and ask the hand of Madanasundari." Dhavala's parents immediately set off to the old washerman's house. As Madanasundari also loved Dhavala, her parents had no objection for their marriage. Their marriage took place with great pomp and show and Madanasundari was sent off to her husband's house. One day, Madanasundari's brother came to invite them for the festival. "Dhavala, as this is the first festival after your marriage, I wish to take you and Madanasundari to the village for the festival." Dhavala agreed and left with his wife.
After the festival celebrations, Dhavala, Madanasundari, and her brother set out on the return journey. On the way, Madanasundari's brother wanted to visit the temple of Goddess Kali. While Madanasundari and Dhavala waited in the bullock-cart, he entered the temple.
As he neared the deity, he felt a strong desire to sacrifice himself to the Goddess. With a sharp sword he cut off his head. Madanasundari was worried over her brother's long absence. "Dhavala! Please go and search for my brother. It has been a long time since he went inside the temple." When Dhavala saw his brother-in-law dead, he took the sword and sacrificed himself to Goddess Kali.
After a long wait, Madanasundari entered the temple and was shocked to see both her husband and her brother dead. "O Goddess Kali! I cannot live without my beloved husband and brother. Please grant them as my husband and brother in next life too." So saying, she took the sword to cut off her head.
Goddess Kali appeared before Madanasundari and said, "My dear child, your true love for your husband and brother has moved me. I shall give you a boon. You can join their heads with the bodies and bring them back to life." Madanasundari wasted no time. In the hurry, she replaced Dhavala's head with her brother's and vice versa.
Madanasundari was perplexed. She could not choose as to who her husband was." Betal stops King Vikram and says, "O King! Who amongst the two is the husband of Madanasundari? Speak out! Otherwise your head shall break into a thousand pieces." After a while, Vikram replied, " The body that has her husband's head is her husband. The head is the most important organ in the human body, as the rest of the body is identified by the head."
As soon as
Vikram finished his answer, Betal said, "Vikram! I admire your sense of justice. But, you've broken your silence and so I'm forced to leave you." So saying, Betal flew back to the tree.
